NAMM 2019: The new Supro Blues King 12 gives more for less
Based on a Class A, all valve model amp, but with an added kick!
NAMM 2019 is just around the corner and Supro has announced a new combo, the Blues King 12. It’s a Class A, all-tube amplifer with a lower price point and looks to have plenty of gain on tap.
Supro Blues King 12
The new Supro Blues King 12 has its roots in classic ‘Rock & Roll’ and that British Invasion 60s tone. It is a single-ended, Class A all-valve combo with a single custom-made BK12 12″ speaker. The BK2 was designed to emulate the old field-coil speakers used in American tube amps of the era, Supro says. The amp is based around a 6L6 tube in the power amp and a 12AX7 in the preamp section, so it should sound pretty decent. Rated at a more than acceptable 15 watts, this amp could be useful for anyone wanting classic ’60s inspired guitar tones but also needing a little more gain at their disposal as this model has a little extra kick…
FET
The kick comes in the form of a footswitchable boost and gain modes. These extra gain stages are powered by FET circuitry. This allows Supro to give you more gain than you would associate with such a simple valve circuit and should allow the Blues King 12 to deliver a bit of extra grunt/dirt when required.
Spring Reverb
There’s a simple three-band EQ section comprising Treble, Mids and Bass. This amp looks simple enough to use. Supro has even managed to squeeze in built-in analogue spring reverb with its own dedicated control on the main panel. You also get an effects loop and a handy Line Out on the rear of the amp, as well.
Crowded Marketplace
You can check out the official demo video below to get an idea of what the Supro Blues King 12 can achieve. There are already a lot of mid-priced all-valve amps in the marketplace, so the Blues King 12 has some pretty stiff competition at this price point.
However, one thing I like about this model is the real spring reverb rather than a digital recreation. Having that extra gain could be a very useful option for some players.
RRP – GBP 599 / USD 900
