NAMM 2019: Voltage Modular 1.2 features VST instrument and effect hosting
Cherry Audio has announced the release of Voltage Modular 1.2. It’s only an incremental update but it has a huge new feature – the ability to host VST and AU plugins.
Voltage Modular 1.2
Since it first appeared at NAMM last year Voltage Modular seemed to crawl to its release in September. But since its arrival the updates and development has been coming thick and fast. Only in December they added polyphonic modules and gave the module designer away for free. My inbox has seen a steady stream of press releases with new modules from third parties. They’ve really got some momentum behind them.
Plug-in support is very interesting. The idea is that you can host a regular third-party VST instrument or effect inside a module in Voltage Modular. The module front panel gives you MIDI in/out and 4 audio in/out. Up to 12 parameters can be automated via CV from elsewhere in your rack. And you can still access the plug-in GUI if you wish. VCV Rack introduced this feature back in November and it’s great to see Voltage Modular step up and not get left behind.

Other new features include OpenGL acceleration support to offload the drawing of modules and cables to your computers GPU. There’s now a favourites category so you can keep your favourite modules in one place. Each module now has it’s own presets. You can add modules with a right-click and select from a list. And now all the cables can be transparent until you hover over the jack.
All in all a decent update that’s free to all users.
