Superbooth 2019: Rabid Elephant Portal Kick

Portal Kick
The idea was to capture some of the nostalgia of 808 and 909 kick drum sounds while building a sound from scratch. They started with a sine core and then put a click source right into the waveform which you can then control bi-polarly with a click and tick control. The envelope comes from the Natural Gate giving it a really organic feel. There are three envelopes, one for tick, one for pitch/FM and one for decay. There’s a “Portal” wavefolder that brings in distortion and then added some EQ.
The idea was to build in everything that people normally do to build kick drums in modular – the click, the EQ, the layering, distortion, envelopes – and put it all in the one module. Design it to do kicks rather than bringing in tools designed for other things to shape the sound. In that way all the ranges of the controls are built around the sweet spots for kick drum sounds.
That makes a lot of sense. It’s still in development though and Rabid Elephant are not known for their fast turn around on product development or production with lots of back orders for those elusive Natural Gates. However, each product they make is elegantly designed and completely unique.
