Musikmesse 2016: Audio-Technica Introduces ATM350a Microphone Systems
With over 50 years experience in developing microphones, Audio-Technica have announced an update to their ATM350 Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone. With an increase in max SPL capabilities, the ATM350a will now be available in six different packages with a range of ‘UniMount’ components. These components are designed to deliver the perfect mounting and positioning solutions for a range of instruments on the stage and in the studio.
Building upon the success of their ATM350 cardioid condenser microphone, the new ATM350a has been improved to handle another 10db of SPL. With an impressive limit of 159db max SPL, this should be more than high enough for almost any application. For example, the ATM350 has been a popular clip-on drum mic found in live music venues and rock & roll style studios, which shows Audio-Technica are embracing their market.
However, I can’t help but make the direct comparison with DPA’s d:vote series, utilising their 4099 hyper-cardioid condenser microphone. The DPA solution is more expensive and certainly not as robust, but the clarity and detail the 4099 offers is far superior. I am really pleased to see this new series from Audio-Technica, which presents another (cheaper) option to for clip-on style condenser mics. I just wonder if they could have improved on the sonics of the ATM350 by developing an entirely new capsule perhaps?
The available ATM350a Microphone Systems are:
- ATM350U: Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone with Universal Clip-on Mounting System (5″ Gooseneck)
- ATM350UL: Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone with Universal Clip-on Mounting System (9″ Gooseneck)
- ATM350PL: Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone with Piano Mounting System (9″ Gooseneck)
- ATM350D: Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone with Drum Mounting System (5″ Gooseneck)
- ATM350W: Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone with Woodwind Mounting System (5″ Gooseneck)
- ATM350UcW: Wireless Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone with Universal Clip-on Mounting System (5″ Gooseneck)
(Includes ATM350acW microphone terminated with locking 4-pin connector for use with Audio-Technica’s UniPak wireless transmitters)
Prices will range between 289 – 306 GBP, and should be available from July. This makes them cheaper than DPA’s 4099 series, but is it enough?
