Friedman Amplification JJ Junior: New 20-Watt Jerry Cantrell model as combo or head
Friedman Amplification’s JJ Junior first appeared during Winter NAMM and caused quite a stir. Its maker says it gives you the same Jerry Cantrell tones of the larger JJ-100 signature head, but at a far more manageable 20 Watts. A clever combination of features makes for a versatile amp for live or recording.

The new JJ Junior features an internal load with a very handy cab-simulated XLR output. It also has that much more ear-friendly 20-Watt output. Dave Friedman and Jerry Cantrell worked hard to keep the tone of the amps as close to the original 100-watt JJ-100 head, they say, while reducing the output significantly.

Extra Dirt
The amp is based around an EL84 power section, which has plenty of grunt/gain. But Friedman says the extra JBE switch unleashes even more gain and harmonic content. The amp’s combination of features – the Clean and Dirty channels, the extra gain (if you need it) and the XLR speaker emulated output with internal load – should make it super versatile.
The Clean channel sports a single volume knob with a bright switch while the Dirty channel has Gain, Master, Treble, Middle, and Bass controls.

Recording
This amp should be well suited to recording duties, making for a flexible amp. I like the Friedman ultra-transparent series FX loop that on these amps (I have one on my Friedman Pink Taco) and it’s great for adding in your effects.
The Friedman JJ Junior is available as either a head with matching 1×12 cab or as a combo. If you buy it as a combo it comes loaded with a 12″ Celestion 16-ohm G12M Creamback speaker.
