Antares Auto-Tune EFX+: An all-in-one solution for warped vocals?
Antares has introduced the Auto-Tune EFX+ plug-in. The latest addition to the Auto-Tune family is a combination of the classic pitch correction algorithm with additional effects. Whether you love or hate them, it’s hard to ignore the over-processed vocal sounds that dominate current R&B and hip hop tracks. With Auto-Tune EFX+, it seems like Antares has come up with an all-in-one solution for just that.
Antares says that Auto-Tune EFX+ is designed for “contemporary music creation”. Add to that the fact that they chose to feature a Skrillex testimony on the website for Auto-Tune EFX+, and it should be obvious where this is going. This isn’t meant to be a subtle pitch correction tool. Rather, Auto-Tune EFX+ embraces heavy processing, “extreme vocal mutations and transformations”, as Antares puts it. That pits it against plug-ins like iZotope Vocal Synth 2, and some hardware units like the Roland VT-4.
Six vocal effects
The successor to Auto-Tune EFX 3 combines the core of Antares’ flagship pitch correction plug-in with a new multi-FX rack called Auto-EFX. In addition to pitch correction (or “over-correction”), you get six effects for dialing in those warped vocals. “Pitch and Throat” provides real-time pitch and formant shifting. “Duet” evokes the effect of a doubled vocal, with adjustable pitch and timing variations. There is also a high-pass filter and a vocoder emulation. Finally, Auto-Tune EFX+ contains a tube amp simulation and an effect called “Mutate”, which seems to be a ring modulator. The effects can be controlled with an X/Y pad.
The Auto-Motion feature was carried over from Auto-Tune EFX 3, but Antares says that it has been “greatly improved”. This is a pattern generator that creates melodic patterns by pitch-shifting the original track. It comes with a library of patterns. According to Antares, patterns can now be triggered automatically when an input signal is detected.
Antares claims that Auto-Tune EFX+ has a latency low enough for real-time processing during tracking or a live performance.
Compatibility
Antares Auto-Tune EFX+ is available for macOS (AAX, VST3, AU, all 64-bit), and Windows (AAX, VST2, VST3, 64-bit only). Contrary to Auto-Tune Live and Pro, it does not require an iLok key.
Price and upgrades
Antares Auto-Tune EFX+ costs USD 199. Antares says that a demo version will soon be available. You can upgrade to Auto-Tune EFX+ from previous Auto-Tune EFX versions for USD 69, and from Auto-Tune Access for USD 109.
