Gibson Lee Roy Parnell ’59 Les Paul Standard is based on his ’57 Goldtop
Gibson has just announced a new Lee Roy Parnell ’59 Les Paul Standard signature model based on his popular ’57 Goldtop signature model from Gibson Custom Shop. This model is a ’59 Standard guitar with similar specifications.
Gibson Lee Roy Parnell ’59 Les Paul Standard
The original Lee Roy Parnell’s ’57 Goldtop signature model from the Gibson Custom Shop became an instant classic and is still sought-after by collectors. Now Gibson and Lee Roy have released a flame top ’59 Burst instead of a ’57 Goldtop.
The guitars construction remain the same, from the contoured cutaway edge to the revised pickup routes, which Lee Roy specified in order to ‘capture more character from the wood’.
Abilene Sunset Fade
Each guitar has a figured two piece flame maple top finished in a vintage-correct nitrocellulose lacquer “Abilene Sunset Fade” burst. The story goes that the fade is apparently inspired by Lee Roy’s home town in Texas.
Easy Access
You also get Lee Roy Parnell Custom ’59 Profile one-piece mahogany neck with an Indian Rosewood fretboard fitted with Medium-Jumbo frets. The guitar also has some of the rear of the cutaway removed for better upper fret access, another feature preferred by Mr Parnell.
Vintage Tone Circuit
For the pickups, the guitar has a an under-wound ’57 Classic humbucker in the neck, an under-wound ’57 Classic Plus in the bridge and the new Vintage Tone Circuit which uses PIO (paper-in-oil) capacitors and vintage taper potentiometers.
This guitar is obviously a guitar that’s heavy on vintage details and styling, with some nice tweaks to the classic Les Paul recipe favoured by Lee Roy Parnell favours. It is not cheap, but then if you like Custom Shop Signature Gibson Les Paul models, this won’t be a surprise to you anyway. You can hear Lee Roy Parnell giving us a run through of his new signature model in the official video below.
