Radikal Technologies DELTA CEP A semi-modular swarms into the shops
It feels like we’ve been waiting an age for this remarkable looking semi-modular synthesizer to move beyond the synth shows and make itself available. We first saw it at NAMM 2018 but now Radikal believes the time is right to set the DELTA CEP A loose on an unsuspecting world.
DELTA CEP A
This is a semi-modular synthesizer that can operate in its own case or plonked into 68HP of Eurorack in a similar fashion to the Mother-32 or Neutron. It combines 9 synthesis modules with 23 knobs, 14 buttons, 28 LEDs and 31 patch points. It’s laid out like a modular rack but it’s semi-modular and so behind the scenes certain connections are made to ensure that it can act as a regular synthesizer without any patching. But if you do want to start patching cables into it then you have lots of room to do so.
The DELTA CEP A is 4-voice polyphonic with paraphonic articulation so all the voices run through the same filter and VCA. This is provided by a very cool Swarm Oscillator that can conjure up 2 oscillators per voice with detuning. The filter section has 3 different filters: a digital 12dB multimode, an analogue 12dB multimode and a digital 24dB low pass filter. Modulation is provided by a single ADSR and LFO with 5 waveforms. At the end of the chain is an effects section with delay, chorus, flanging and phasing. There’s also a useful MIDI interface.
Over on the left is the “Interpolator” which enables you to take snapshots of the synth, save, recall and morph between them. It’s quite clever in that you can play these snapshots sequentially with a sequencer moving to a different sound with every note. This also allows for it to come loaded with a bunch of factory presets which by all accounts are pretty impressive.

The DELTA CEP A is a capable and versatile rackable semi-modular polysynth that’s taken far too long to get here. I’m looking forward to hearing what people do with it. Radikal is asking €899 for the Eurorack version or €1198 for the one in the desktop case. That seems a lot for 4-voices but you are getting a hybrid synthesizer based upon the RT-311 Swarm Oscillator that’s capable of building up to 8 oscillator clones that can be pitched at musical intervals, chords, clusters, detuned and layered into huge unisons or polyphonic tones. The power of this thing shouldn’t be underestimated.
