Audiothing thinks you should try cranking some Valves
There’s no shortage of valve distortion and saturation plug-ins out there, but the regular appearance of new releases shows there’s still work left in perfecting the technology. The most recent launch is Audiothing’s Valves, a vintage valve emulation plug-in that also employs a multimode resonant filter and a cabinet/EQ section.
Valves
Valves is arranged in a configuration of four independent modules. The Valve module emulates vintage tube behaviour, offering a Triode/Pentode switch and Drive/Bias/Tone controls. Next in line is a multimode filter with a Pre/Post valve switch, Cutoff and Resonance controls. It’s modelled after a classic 2-pole/4-pole ladder filter. The Cabinet/EQ unit offers a choice of 8 modelled guitar cabinets with Bass and Treble frequency controls. Finally, the Master section contains Input and Output gain controls, a Mix knob to blend Dry/Wet signal, and a Soft Clip switch. The GUI is adorned by a glowing valve and a simulated VU meter.
Straight and to the point, Valves is all about getting things sounding tube-y. While its interface is as intuitive as it possibly can be, the plug-in ships with 35 presets that you can explore or start out of.
Price and availability
Valves is being sold for EUR 29, down from an introductory EUR 59. It’s also a free download for owners of Audiothing’s Valve Filter or Valve Exciter plug-ins. Valves is available in VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX formats for 64-bit Windows and Mac computers. A free demo version can be downloaded and used with the following limitations: 3-second long silence interruptions every 45 seconds and preset saving is disabled.
