Spectrum Synthesizer Bundle brings Mutable Instruments Eurorack modules to iOS
Spectrum is a collection of AU plug-ins for iOS, based upon the open source designs of Mutable Instruments Eurorack modules. Why hadn’t anyone thought of that before?
Spectrum
Developer Thoma Burns has chosen a couple of Mutable Instruments modules on which to base his designs. The modules in question are Plaits, Rings, Elements and Clouds and it’s fairly easy to work out which corresponds to which.
- Spectrum: An oscillator with 14 algorithms and up to 8 voice polyphony.
- Modal: Blowed and struck sounds running through a 64-band resonator.
- Resonator: 7 string generating algorithms.
- Granular: Sampler, looper, pitch shifter and reverb.

Each very basic looking plug-in also features an LFO and ADSR envelope, XY touchpad (except Modal), modulation matrix and MIDI CC control of parameters. The last three are also loadable as effects.
It should be noted that these are AU instruments and not standalone and so you need to load them up within a DAW or host like Audiobus or GarageBand.
They are not much to look at but it’s an awesome way of getting some of that Mutable Instruments magic into your iPad music making. And, they are completely free.
