Audified ToneSpot Drum Express: Fat drums made simple
Only a few weeks after launching the Pro version, Audified has released ToneSpot Drum Express. The plug-in does many of the same things as its Pro cousin, but with a much simpler, streamlined interface. If you’re looking for smashing drums but don’t feel like twiddling knobs, here you go.
It was to be expected: All other plug-ins in the ToneSpot series come in Pro and Express versions, so it was only a matter of time until ToneSpot Drum Express came out. It’s a much simpler, and much cheaper, version of the same processor, which will appeal to you if quick results are what you’re after.
Drum sounds made simple
According to Audified, ToneSpot Drum Express has “exactly the same amount of processing power” as the Pro version. It’s a preset-based plug-in that improves your drum sounds with one click, Audified claims. This means that it’ll all come down to how well the presets are made.
If ToneSpot Drum Express contains the same processors as its bigger sibling, it runs your drums through a series of specialized EQs, gates, compressors, and saturators. You don’t get to see or tweak any of what’s going on under the hood, though. The GUI only has basic input and output level controls, a VU meter, a simple gate, and a mix knob. That’s in addition to the preset browser, which you will end up using a lot.
While many producers will want the added flexibility of the Pro version, there is a case to be made for one-click plug-ins like this. Sometimes you just need to let your creativity flow, and anything that involves too much thinking and tweaking can be distracting. It seems like ToneSpot Drum Express is a cool way to add some punch to your drum tracks quickly, without having to worry about the details. If the presets are any good, that is.
