Puremagnetik has released Zerone, a granular effects processor that shoots your audio to pieces with its laser eyes. These particles are then time compressed or expanded, and float in time like a magic carpet. Does Zerone sound as cool as it looks?

Like many plug-ins by Puremagnetik, Zerone sports an extravagantly designed, comic-themed GUI. Behold the laser-eyed goddess, as she takes control of your audio and pulverizes it with her piercing rays of light!

Two parallel granular processors

The two beams light up Zerone’s two parallel granular processors. These audio particle accelerators extract small bits of audio from your signal, which are then time-compressed or expanded. Both processors have identical controls for size, time, pan, and position, as well as an echo effect. There’s also a blend control and an output level knob.

According to Puremagnetik, the results range from “repeat, timestretch, and stutter-like effects” to “huge washes of evolving, cascading ambiences”. The video below gives a pretty good impression of how Zerone turns simple sounds like a piano and guitar into interesting, evolving soundscapes. If you’re into this kind of granular processing, Zerone could be a worthwhile addition to your arsenal alongside plug-ins like Creative Intent Remnant, Output Portal, Cosmosf FX4, Puremagnetik’s own Granule, and the like.

Price and compatibility

As of now, Zerone is only available as part of the Spark subscription, which costs USD 9 per month or USD 60 per year and gets you a new plug-in every month. You can now also get Spark through Puremagnetik’s Patreon page. If Puremagnetik stays true to its way of doing things, Zerone should become available as an individual plug-in for USD 20 in a couple of months or so.

Puremagnetik Zerone is available for Windows (VST, 64-bit) and macOS (AU, VST, 64-bit).
