SRM-Flex: Mackie intros ultra-compact portable column PA system
Mackie has a new entry in its PA line-up, the SRM-Flex Portable Column PA System. It has a lightweight and portable design, the kind of sound quality tied with Mackie’s SRM Series, a 6-channel digital mixer, and complete wireless control and streaming. The SRM-Flex is a three-piece modular tower, with a 10” LF woofer in the molded cabinet base module, which also contains the 1300W amplifier and digital mixer.
The wide-dispersion array comprises 6 x 2” high-performance HF drivers. The 6-channel digital mixer takes two mic/line sources and there’s a dedicated stereo channel with dual 1/4” line inputs, as well as an additional 1/8” Aux In / Bluetooth® streaming channel. Channels 1 and 2 have individual 2-band EQs and Reverb level controls with 3 different reverbs to choose from. The system itself has 3 preset voicing modes (Speech, Music and Live) and an XLR Mix Out for connecting to another SRM-Flex system.
Control is established via dedicated physical controls for critical adjustments and via the SRM-Flex Connect™ app for Android and iOS devices. The app has the same controls as well as customization options for the front LED and metering behavior, presets, and other functionality.
Column speakers scale back ‘line array’ technology by combining multiple smaller high-mid frequency drivers to focus the sound. Saving on space and weight, column systems are an have the benefit of keeping sight lines to the stage clear and take up less transport space.
Price and availability
The Mackie SRM-Flex Portable Column PA System will be available worldwide starting October 2019. Sold individually, the US MSRP pricing for SRM-Flex is $1624.99. The speaker is priced competitively and will present a sensible choice when stacked against competition from the likes of dB Technologies and LD Systems.
