Audiomodern Playbeat is a creative groove randomizer plug-in
Need some new inspiration for your beats? Audiomodern has released Playbeat, a sample-based pattern generator plug-in that helps you come up with new ideas by randomizing grooves. It’s available for Windows and macOS, and there’s also an AUv3 version for iOS devices.
Audiomodern Playbeat creates a new groove every time
Playbeat is a sample-based groove plug-in that creates patterns and drum loops automatically. According to Audiomodern, it generates patterns using algorithms and intelligent randomization. In addition to the steps for each track, it randomizes pitch and volume, depending on what you tell it to do. If you like other pattern generators like ACDGEN, Random Groove Generator or Audiomodern’s own Riffer, Playbeat is worth looking at.
Playbeat lets you import your own samples and adjust their starting points. It offers four sample slots, for each of which you can create separate random patterns. The steps, pitch and volume can be randomized independently. The range of randomization is adjustable, so you don’t end up with completely chaotic, unusable results. If you don’t like the result, you can adjust notes and values manually. Finished patterns can be saved as presets. The plug-in also offers some performance options, like automatic cycling through random patterns.
Price and compatibility
Audiomodern Playbeat is available for Windows 7 and up and macOS 10.12 and up. It comes in VST, VST3, AU and AAX versions (32/64 bit). Until October 10, the plug-in is on sale for 39 Euros at the Audiomodern website. After that, the price will increase to 50 Euros.
The iOS version is available from the App Store for 7.99 Euros. The app requires iOS 9.3 or higher and is compatible with iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. It runs as an AUv3 in any compatible iOS DAW and synchronizes via Ableton Link.
