GForce Software has introduced a new version of their Virtual String Machine (VSM) homage the string machines of old. The biggest new feature is that playback is now in stereo!

Virtual String Machine V3

Seems like a strange omission when you think about it but Gforce has reworked the VSM sound library to offer the sort of stereo sound found in the Soline String Ensemble and the Roland 505. This gives much more movement to the ensemble textures within a stereo field. To accompany the new feature they’ve crafted some stereo sound sets. And it’s not just old string synths, there are strings pulled from the Roland Juno 106 and Yamaha CS-80.

VSM is based upon instruments such as the Eminent 310 and Freeman String Symphonizer through to the highly lauded Solina, Elka Rhapsody, Logan String Melody, Korg PE2000 and many more. VSM lets you split of layer two sounds generating some hybrid string action and unique blends of ensembles.

Also new in version 3 is the second interface design and an alternative GUI for higher density screens. They’ve also jiggled the LFO destinations about.

VSM comes with over 5.5GB of library covering 100 different sound sets with each note of a 4-octave range individually sampled and looped. There’s a whole multi-mode filter section, two envelope generators, pitch and filter LFO and those all-important vintage Ensemble and Phaser effects.

Version 3 is a free update to existing users or if you want some vintage strings in your life then you’ll need to find £79.99.

While Gforcesoftware keeps their prices relatively high and they don’t often do discounts – updates are sometimes free and great value at that. M-Tron Pro and VSM are both free updates to v3 for current users.

    What’s not to like?

Well, upgrade prices for Oddity and impOscar are pretty darn high (79 pounds).
