Steinberg Padshop 2: Granular and Spectral oscillators co-existing in the Microcosmos
Steinberg has released an update to the rather wonderful Padshop virtual instrument and bringing samples together in a microcosmos of grains and spectra to discover completely new sounds.
Padshop 2
The original Padshop was all about the granular approach to samples; pulling out textures and going on adventures of modulation. Padshop 2 introduces a Spectral Oscillator. It can play any sample at any speed, at any position, in either direction and at any pitch – that sounds exciting!
You can push the tonal character around shaping the spectrum of the samples using parameters such as “Purity” and “Inharmonicity” or the new low-cut filter that works purely in the spectral domain.
The look of Padshop 2 retains the style and layout of the original so you’ll have no trouble finding your way about. And they’ve also folded in all the features of PadShop Pro which means you can drag and drop your own samples directly onto the GUI.
There’s now an arpeggiator page for creating patterns and a whole bunch of new effects including EQ, Ensemble and Phaser. There are two additional LFOs and an extra envelope plus a load of new filters from Retrologue 2.
Padshop 2 comes with 100 new presets of unique soundscapes and synthesizer samples that can be pushed and morphed all over the place. It sounds really good and while pad sounds are a focus it can do so much more than that. Although personally I like the environmental soundscape focus and there’s a lot of good weird and modulating textures in here.
Padshop 2 is available now for £110 or £25 as an upgrade from Padshop Pro – MacOS or Windows.
