Danelectro 64XT: Vintage offset looks with modern playability?
A modern take on a vintage-style offset design
Looking very similar to the 2018 ’66T, the new Danelectro 64XT has a revised body shape and no f-holes. But are they what the guitar buying public really wants from a Danelectro?
Offset Vibratos in a modern age
This new guitar is a mishmash of old meets new. A vintage body shape and the classic Danelectro ‘coke bottle’ headstock meet a modern-day Wilkinson trem (they call it a vibrato) system and a very modern precision cut graphite nut, to aid tuning stability.
There’s a large, angled single-coil pickup at the neck position and a dual humbucking lipstick pickup installed at the opposite angle at the bridge position. The controls include a master volume and master tone control with coil tap for the bridge pickup as well as a 3-way selector switch.
This is a bolt-on neck design, so it should have a pretty snappy tone, similar to Fender-style instruments. Having a blend of pickups available will more than likely give it some unique tones, though.
Danelectro 64XT
In some ways, these are the perfect blend of old and new. I like the styling, as I am quite keen on offset shaped instruments. I find them comfortable to play and they usually hang well on a strap. Here, Danelectro has tried to improve tuning stability and added a nice pickup combination, as well. The new Danelectro range will be available in Black, Vintage Cream, Aqua, Dark Red and 3 Tone Sunburst finishes.
You can head over to the new Danelectro website to read up on all the 64XT specs. I have also popped a nice video demo of the guitar in action below for you to listen to as well.
