Behringer introduces the SL 75C dynamic microphone: a $20 SM57 clone
Behringer has announced the SL 75C dynamic microphone. After the SL 84C and SL 85S, an SM57 clone was only a matter of time, and here it is. At just under $20, will the Behringer SL 75C give the most popular microphone of all times a run for its money?
Behringer SL 75C
Behringer isn’t stopping, even during the holidays. Only a couple of weeks after releasing the BA 19A and B 906, the company has announced the SL 75C dynamic microphone. And by the looks of it, it couldn’t be more obvious which classic mic they’ve based this one on: the venerable Shure SM57, the most popular dynamic instrument mic of all times.
The SL 75C is a dynamic microphone with a cardioid polar pattern. Behringer claims that it offers an “ultra-wide frequency response for brilliant and transparent sound”. They couldn’t have come up with any more generic terms, but hey, it sounds good… The company also says that the SL 75C has a smooth midrange emphasis, which makes it suitable for vocals, drums, and guitars. The microphone comes with an integrated spherical wind and pop noise filter and a shock mount system for reduced handling noise.
The SM57 is famous for being built like a tank, and Behringer claims that the SL 75C is similarly rugged. It’s made out of metal and “high quality components”, as Behringer puts it. The microphone includes a mic stand adapter and an impact-resistant carrying case.
We’ll have to wait for an A/B comparison to find out how the SL 75C sounds and if it’s really “the only microphone you’ll ever need”, as Behringer is convinced. I have doubts about that last part. But at this price, expect to see the SL 75C show up everywhere not too long from now.
Price and availability
Behringer hasn’t officially stated the price of the SL 75C yet, but it’s already showing up at some retailers for USD 19.99. Looking at the other mics they’ve recently announced, that seems about right. Sources say that the SL 75C will become available near the end of January 2020.
