Cog Effects Knightfall 66 and Mini 66 Overdrives: Double the dirt
Cog Effects are based in Sheffield, England and make a range of effects while also taking on custom orders as well. The new Nightfall 66 and Mini 66 Overdrives are both new to their product range.
These two overdrives both fall firmly into the boutique market of effects pedals. They feature aluminium CNC-engraved cases, so visually they both stand out straight away from the regular screen-printed pedal cases, which are far more common. Internally, Cog Effects use jack plugs which are not mounted on the PCB, which should make them very robust. They are, of course, both true bypass, so no ‘tone sucking’ when the effect is not engaged.
Knightfall 66 Overdrive
The Knightfall 66 features two Gain controls and two Level controls which you can toggle between using the A/B the footswitch. The Voice and Tone controls are used to manage the low and the high end frequencies of the overdrive respectively. There’s also a control labelled Clean which dials in the clean signal, giving your sound more definition. Rather than just blending between the clean and overdrive signals, this allows you to add clean to your overdriven sound. With this amount of control, you should be able to get better results.
Mini 66 Overdrive
The Mini 66 is basically one side of the Knightfall 66, with two switches named Fat and Cut replacing the Voice and Tone Controls of the Knightfall 66. So if you already have a crowded pedal board or are just after one core overdrive sound then this could be the one for you.
Both pedals are hand-built and designed in the UK, and the pricing given this type of production value seems very reasonable. I have seen lots of other boutique builders charging a lot more for overdrive pedals of a similar calibre.
The world of overdrive pedals is already a pretty crowded place and so it will be interesting to see how these two pedals are received by the guitar playing world.
