Lego Microtonal Guitar: Blocks as frets, wherever you want them
The “Lego Microtonal Guitar” was inspired by the designer’s son’s love of Lego and took two years to develop, we hear. It’s an unusual looking instrument that uses 3D-printing and Lego bricks to achieve its microtonal capabilities. Let’s take a closer look…
Lego Microtonal Guitar
Turkish guitarist Tolgahan Çoğulu is the brains behind this unique gadget. Its purpose? To let you play pieces of music that aren’t possible with a regular-fretted guitar. Tolgahan was inspired to build this creation by his 7-year-old son Atlas, who one day happened to make a Lego version of his father’s adjustable microtonal guitar fretboard.
Tolgahan then recruited his friend Ruşen Can Acet and together they set about designing an adjustable microtonal fretboard and custom frets that would be compatible with Lego blocks. The results were then printed using a 3D-printer and mounted to the guitar neck. You can check out the YouTube video below to see how they developed this idea, and hear the results.
Blocks of Tone!
It’s a pretty clever concept if you think about it. By using the specially 3D-printed fretboard, the player is essentially able to place frets wherever they’re required. This opens up a whole new world of microtonal scales. It could also be an invaluable learning tool, as it allows beginners to add in only the frets required to learn certain scale positions.
