TONSTURM FRQ Shift: Dual frequency shifter for sound effects and more
TONSTURM has released FRQ Shift, a dual spectral shifter plug-in with many effects and plenty of modulation. The makers say that the plug-in is capable of anything from subtle modulation to stereo enhancement and extreme atonal effects.
TONSTURM FRQ Shift
TONSTURM is best known for its cinematic sound effects packs, and unique sound effects seem to be one of the main uses of their new FRQ Shift plug-in. But FRQ Shift looks like it could be very useful in music production, as well.
TONSTURM describes the plug-in as a clean-sounding, artefact free frequency shifter. They claim that FRQ Shift preserves the transients, which means that it can be used on rhythmic and percussive parts without degrading them. The plug-in offers two independent shifter sections, which you can combine and cross-fade between them.
For more sonic possibilities, you can insert four effects into the frequency shifter feedback path: Shifter, Delay, Resonator and Filter. With high and low cut filters, aliasing and soft clip controls, an overall dry/wet knob and M/S processing, FRQ Shift goes beyond the feature set of a typical pitch shifter plug-in.
The modulation section is where the action happens. You can set up custom LFOs as modulation sources, and use them to modulate many parameters. This means that FRQ Shift should be capable of all sorts of evolving textures and swirling effects. It sounds like TONSTURM plans to use this modulation system in other upcoming plug-ins, as well, and I’m curious to find out what they have in mind.
Price and compatibility
TONSTURM FRQ Shift is available for macOS 10.9.5 or higher and Windows 7 or higher. The plug-in comes in VST, VST3, AAX, Audio Suite and AU formats. An iLok account is required for authorization.
Until February 18, 2020, you can get FRQ Shift for the introductory price of USD 89. After that, the regular price will be USD 129. A fully functional 14-day trial version is available on the TONSTURM website.
