A bunch of quality granular effects in one pedal? Oh yes, and done right, too. The Hologram Electronics Microcosm Granular Pedal is pretty special. And it’s a universal tool aimed at all musicians, not just guitarists. Let’s dive in!

So what’s this beast all about? Let’s take a quick look at the FX types on board. First off is a low-pass filter with resonance, a 60-second looper, MIDI control and 11 granular effects. It also has stereo reverb on board, pitch modulation and 16 memory slots for its own loops. The scope of the possibilities isn’t just ample. It’s potentially huge.
The most immediate application for this kind of effects is, of course, glitch-style music and sounds. You can break up the source signal into minuscule granular pieces and then reorder them in new and musically exciting ways.
The outcome of granular synthesis and effects can be (and often feels) pretty random. But that is half the fun of the effect, as it can unlock your creativity and help you create new sounds and textures.
No DAW required!
You can be sure that anything you pass through the Microcosm will sound significantly more interesting! There are a buttons to adjust the sound, at least to a certain degree. The individual programs are presented in the video, which is a good starting point. Do yourself a favour and take the 2 minutes to watch it in full. I found the video super useful in getting an idea of what it can achieve.
Usually, you have to fire up your DAW and use a plugin to get some to get granular effects running. To have all that in a convenient pedal format is awesome. Finally, a way to play with granular effects live.
Microcosm is slated for release in April 2020. It looks like loads of fun, especially if you appreciate glitchy noises and soundscapes.
