Dual and Quad VCA modules in “Kosmo” Eurorack from Look Mum No Computer
Sam Battle of Look Mum No Computer has released his latest VCA modules. The 1181 Dual VCA and 1183/1184 Quad VCA are available as PCB/Panel kits in the overlarge Kosmo Eurorack format.
Kosmo Eurorack?
Also known as “Metric 5U” Sam calls it the Kosmo format. It’s like a halfway house between Eurorack and 5U modular. It takes the voltage format and accessibility of Eurorack but boosts it up to a size so that it’s not so fiddly. Kosmo is 20cm high and uses 1/4″ jacks for patching. This is very much a DIY format and you won’t find many modules for sale in this size. But if you wanted to start a rack of something designed more for live performance and is a bit more robust and grabbable than Eurorack then get started with some Look Mum No Computer PCB/Panel kits.
1181 Dual VCA
2 lots of identical VCA in a single module with an input, an output and a CV input with a positive offset knob. There’s a handy LED to show the voltage level. It’s based on the CEM3360 chip and is a relatively straight forward build.
1183/1184 Quad VCA
This Quad VCA builds in some mixing and is based upon two AS3340 dual VCA chips. As with the Dual VCA each channel has an audio input, output and CV input but they are also mixed to a master output with its own volume level. They are not normalled so you can use the individual outputs and mix outputs together. Each VCA also has an LED and a mute switch.
I totally get the Kosmo concept because Eurorack is indeed a bit fiddly and I can see why Same appreciates something a bit bigger for his energetic live performances. Might have to have a go at this format at some point.
The cost of the Dual VCA PCB/Panel is only £22 and the Quad VCA is £30. You’ll have to source the rest of the components yourself and the Bill Of Materials is available on the website. It’s almost rude not to give one a go.
