Out of Russia comes the stunning looking duophonic Apparatus synthesizer from Eternal Engine. Just look at those tubes sticking out the top!
Apparatus
They say it’s the first Russian duophonic synthesizer based on gas and vacuum filled radio tubes. It uses circuitry created in the spirit of the first half of the 20th century when everything ran on tubes. It couples this with a modern ARM core control system to produce this retro-modern synthesizer.
The audio path is based entirely on these tubes. The sound generation comes from a pair of independent thyratron oscillators with quartz frequency stabilisation. The filter is vactrol controlled and offers self-oscillation. The VCA is based on tube opto-compressors and there’s a built-in triode asymmetric overdrive. The ADSR has multi and single modes and can be controlled via MIDI velocity. The LFO is also MIDI-syncable. Round it all off with a good looking VU meter and you’ve got one simple but gorgeous synthesizer.
The layout is very clear. There’s a cool chicken-head knob for mixing the oscillators. There’s also portamento control and detuning.
The sound is as fat and entertaining as you imagine it is. The price is $1,899.
