Captain Plugins V5.0: Chords, beats, melodies, basslines and lots of hooks
An all-new version of the Captain Plugins suite brings more Captain Chord Progressions, Captain Beat ultra-modern beat-making, Captain Melody tune generation, Captain Deep basslines and Captain Play keyboard integration. That’s a lot of Captains, I wonder who’s in charge?
Captain Plugins
This is a bundle of compositional plugins from Mixed In Key that features 5 different plugins designed to tackle different music-making tasks. They say they are for sketching out ideas while you focus on your style and creativity. In other words let the Captain write the tunes while you shop for some new trainers and think up creative ways of ruling social media marketing – I’m kidding!
Captain Chord
This is the centre of the plug-in suite. It dictates the key your project is in and discovers complementary chords and suggests progressions that would work well with your choices. There’s a lot of interesting inversions and alternatives which really could give you a different and unexpected flavour to all the boring chords you usually use. It has the ability to base its rhythm on what and how you play and now has full MIDI editing within the plugin.
It comes with a bunch of embedded sounds but version 5 now supports VST plugins right within its own interface. This feature is available across the range of plugins.
Captain Deep
This is where they start to work together. Captain Deep will follow the chord changes in Captain Chord and generate basslines from a library of rhythms and structures. It comes with a load of bass sounds or throw in your favourite synth.
Captain Beat
It’s a drum machine packed full of genre patterns, fills and drum kits. You can, of course, edit the patterns and load up your favourite drum synths or samples if you wish. You can drag-and-drop samples to create your own kits.
Captain Melody
Once everything else is shaping up you can then pull in some tunes. It intelligently follows the chord changes and comes up with ideas for you. There’s even an “idea” button to generate a new tune for you.
Captain Play
With Captain Play it assumes you don’t have a MIDI keyboard and turns the QWERTY keys into an awkwardly playable surface. It does have some neat features with chord layouts and suggestions which is great for learning about inversions and how chords are put together.
Automatic music?
Music In Key stress that this is your music, your song, it’s not all presets and auto-accompaniment, although perhaps much of it can be. I guess it’s down to you whether you fiddle with what’s available or use it as a springboard into your own ideas.
You can get Captain Plugins which includes everything for a special price of $99 for Windows or MacOS.
