Some might say that this is the product that should have accompanied the Aston mics from the beginning. However, Aston mics are a new company and now they’ve had much success, they’re clearly in a stronger position. It’s also interesting to see that they stayed with Rycote and didn’t develop their own shock mount. Either way, this is a great partnership of both technologies and pro audio companies which we can hopefully benefit from. After all, Rycote systems are some of the most renowned available.
Rycote Custom
Until now, the Spirit and Origin mics from Aston used a purple version of Rycote’s standard USM shock mount. Whilst this is very good and I don’t believe the new custom version adds any further isolation properties, the original used 4 screw threads to hold the mic in place. The new Custom version is set to a size which suits the Spirit and Origin mics, but only uses a single screw thread to hold the mic. This makes seating the mic much easier and faster.
The Custom shock mount by Rycote utilises their lyre W-shaped suspension braces as seen in the rest of their InVision product range. These lyre mounts offer better vibration resistant properties and are more durable than elastic.
If purchasing a new Aston mic and now considering which shock mount to opt for, there is an argument to still go for the USM model. The Rycote shock mounts are very good and by purchasing the USM you could use the shock mount with other microphones from your mic cupboard. I find this quite an appealing except, but is it sacrilege to use the Aston purple-coloured mount with a 414?!
More Information
There isn’t any pricing information available yet, but with the previous Rycote USM shock mount for the Aston mics only costing around 50 GBP, I don’t think the Custom version will be far off.
