Swar Systems are a Swiss-based company who specialise in Indian music software. They’ve been around a long time. I remember the SwarPlug virtual Indian instruments they released back at the beginning of the century. Since then, they’ve developed both classical music tools for Indian music and their more Bollywood-focussed plug-ins and music production software. Swar Studio 3 is their Indian flavoured DAW.

Version 3 marks a huge move towards a more professional feel and feature set. It now looks like a proper DAW, shedding the strangely twee appearance of earlier versions. Because of its unique focus, perhaps, it should look different, but I feel that the mainstream environment makes it more approachable to a wider audience. It can record both MIDI and audio and features 41 virtual instruments, including 17 instruments of Indian origin. It now has a proper console style mixer with sends and Aux tracks for grouping output channels.

Uniquely Indian

It’s not a remarkable DAW in terms of the regular features, but it does have all the usual editors and supports both VST/AU instruments and effects plug-ins. What is remarkable is the huge library of Indian rhythms included as MIDI loops. You can drag and drop these onto tabla or dholak tracks for instant Bollywood grooves. You can also drag loops directly from their composition software SwarShala. There are built in Karaoke features which let you view and create lyrics in different notations, including Indian scripts.

There really isn’t enough information on the website to get the full feel for what Swar Studio offers. There’s a very short overview video (below) but I hope they do a lot more of them because this is a very unique piece of software with a potentially huge market. This new version I believe will open it up to musicians and composers who just want to add some Indian flavour to their music.
