Matrix Elements’ FR10 and FR12: Powered guitar cabs for modellers and virtual amps
300-Watt lightweight powered guitar cabs, but are they underpowered?
Matrix Elements launches their new FRFR powered cabinet range that is aimed squarely at those players that use modellers like Fractal Axe-FX or Line 6 Helix. This idea is to give a clean sound that does not colour or distract from your perfectly programmed guitar tone.
FR 10 and FR12 – Full Range, Flat Response
These two models offer clean powered amplification based on Class AB bi-amped designs. Rated at 300W and paired with 8-Ohm drivers, the cabinets have internal DSP processing to offset any time or phase alignment issues, plus bass and high frequencies are filtered through an equal loudness curve. This circuit maintains your tone at both low and higher volumes, so that you get exactly what you programmed at any volume level. So Matrix say, at any rate.
Lightweight cabinets come in at only 9.7kg for the FR10 and 13kg for the FR12, so you won’t need an osteopath on speed dial in your mobile phone. The FR10 measures 52x30x30cm and the FR12 is 52x30x45cm, so either one should fit easily into the boot of your car along with all your other equipment.
The amps also feature an XLR output on the top of the cabs for either running to a mixing desk or in-ear monitoring.
Not the most exciting of products, really. But if you use amp modellers and gig a lot then this could be just what you are looking for. Matrix make some bold claims in their video (below), and I think I would have to go try one out first before I could think about using them at a gig. The wattage seems quite low for what is essentially a transistor amp, so if I was up against a loud drummer or a valve amp I would be afraid of getting drowned out.
RRP FR10 GBP £549 and FR10 GBP £599
