MMXS: Love Hultén’s tribute to the Wintergatan Marble Machine X
Love Hultén crafts extraordinary musical instruments which are often works of art in of themselves. With the MMXS he’s giving us his take on the amazing Marble Machine X from Wintergatan.
MMXS
I have to say that there was something fabulously special about the original Marble Machine made by Martin Molin from Swedish band Wintergatan. It’s amazing to watch as it churned through marbles, made music and slowly fell apart through the effort of it all. He followed it up a couple of years later with the Marble Machine X which was a more complete and competent machine that in its perfection somehow lost some of its charms – but nevertheless it was still an awesome machine. With the MMXS Love Hultén pays tribute to that machine with a handcrafted musical box of his own.
The MMXS is tiny in comparison made of what looks like Meccano. Instead of marbles it’s using ball-bearings and instead of acoustic instruments Love uses the sort of synthesizer you’ll find in all his creations. It has 16 notes that can be triggered by the balls, 128 programming bars, 10 different sounds, speed control and a built-in speaker.
It’s a brilliant thing, gorgeous and beautiful as well as being completely functional. It’s fascinating to watch and sounds fantastic. It’s the sort of machine we should all have on our sideboards. It doesn’t appear to be for sale but then Love is happy to take commissions if you fancy it.
