Learn Sound and Synthesis online with Sarah Belle Reid
Sarah Belle Reid is a modular synthesizer musician who plays the trumpet and builds electroacoustic instruments and controllers and is offering an online course called “Learn Sound and Synthesis”.
Schooled
Sarah has taught at Universities and colleges over the past 5 years and is deeply passionate about education and inspiring people to take risks and explore new directions for their music-making and self-expression. She is now bringing her skills online for the first time.
Learn Sound and Synthesis is a 7-week course covering synthesis basics, history, the nature of sound, pitch and timbre before moving into the nuts and bolts of electronic synthesizer components, control voltage, modulation and strategies for patching. From there she goes into composition and improvisation and into advanced techniques. There’s also a bonus workshop on planning your first hardware modular synth.
You don’t need to own any modular or a synthesizer to take part as the whole course will be based in the virtual modular environment of VCV Rack.
There are only 30 places on the course and enrolment closes today (I believe) and so if this interests you then you should get in touch with her immediately to secure your place. If it’s successful then I imagine it’s the sort of thing that could continue and be run regularly. The course content looks excellent and making use of VCV Rack is a very shrewd and useful idea and means there’s no barrier to entry.
