Gretsch Vintage Select ’89 Jet – inspired by a Chris Cornell favourite
Gretsch to reissue the 1989 Black Hole Sun guitar
Gretsch will be revisiting a popular model from 1989 later this year. The guitar is closely associated with the late Chris Cornell, as he is known for having played a silver sparkle version on Soundgarden’s famous Superunknown album. So this reissue will be good news for fans and players alike.
Gretsch Vintage Select ’89 Jet
The late Chris Cornell used a Gretsch 1989 Jet Silver Sparkle model exclusively while recording Black Hole Sun, even though he is seen playing a Gold Sparkle model in the track’s accompanying video. Luckily for fans, this year Gretsch will be reviving the model in three different colours, Gold Sparkle, Silver Sparkle and Black, all with period-correct specifications. So you can choose whichever finish you prefer.
TV Jones loaded
The guitar comes with a pair of TV Jones pickups installed. You get a TV Classic Plus in the bridge and a Classic in the neck position. These are wired via a master volume with treble-bleed circuit, a master tone, individual pickup volume controls, and a three-way pickup toggle switch.
Each version features a chambered mahogany construction, a maple set-neck with a 12″ radius rosewood fingerboard, G-arrow knobs, a Bigsby vibrato, an Adjusto-Matic bridge, and a set of Gotoh tuners.
The Black Hole Sun guitar
Because of its connection with Chris Cornell and Black Hole Sun, the guitar will no doubt be super popular among Soundgarden fans. But I think it might appeal to players that are not huge fans of the band, too.
The new models are expected to be out in March, 2021.
RRP – USD 2599

Not sure how “super popular” this guitar will be. Looks nice though.
I think the Chris Cornell association will certainly help. Plus, it is a lovely guitar anyway. I want one!
Are these delayed or something? I was told there was a factory closure where these are made.
