NAMM 2021: Output Frontier studio monitors emerge from vaporware
Output and Barefoot Audio’s co-developed studio monitor made for an impressive announcement back at NAMM 2020. It were scheduled for release last summer, but that didn’t happen and not a word about it has been heard since.
Output and Barefoot Audio present Frontier studio monitor
It turns out the project is all but abandoned. The speaker is back with an actual name – Frontier – along with more information and pre-order availability. There’s no release date, but there’s a waitlist – first come, first serve. A pair of Frontiers costs EUR 1399. Below are the official specs:
- Frequency range: 45 Hz – 25 kHz
- Crossover frequency: 3000 Hz
- LF-Amp power: 100 W.
- HF-Amp power: 100 W.
- Input impedance: 20 kOhm
- Maximum power: 265 W.
- Dimensions (H x W x D): 332 x 230 x 200 mm
- Weight: 7 kg
The monitor looks notably sleek, sporting a solid walnut base to isolate the speaker and lend each unit a unique look. A bifurcated soft white LED light provides another visual touch. On the performance side, the Frontier features bespoke 6.5-inch and 1.25-inch coaxial aluminuim alloy drivers tuned for a flat response and low distortion. An Eco Mode switch is found on the back, presumably reducing power consumption while the speakers are idle. There are also balanced combo-XLR and unbalanced 1/4-inch input connections next to the stepped level attenuator. I’d say the EUR 699 price per speaker verges on bargain, considering the upper-end performance and aesthetics.
