The iMac Pro’s time is up! Apple has confirmed that the computer is no longer in production and available while supplies last. Only the standard configuration is available to order now.

The iMac Pro is sailing off

Launched in 2017, the iMac Pro was something of a stop-gap between the older and current Mac Pro. Now that the Mac Pro is a completely different computer from its predecessor and regular iMacs have pretty much caught up with the iMac Pro, it’s understandable the latter is no longer needed in Apple’s line-up. The company is pulling the stops on its production and selling off whatever stock it has left of it.

In place of the iMac Pro, Apple recommends opting for some variant of the current 27-inch iMac or the Mac Pro where more computing power and expandability are needed. It’s an open secret at this point that the company is preparing new iMacs and Mac Pros driven by its in-house developed, benchmark-crushing processors. But if time is a pressing issue, an Intel Mac still gets the job done. It doesn’t make for a great investment, unfortunately, but if you need a top-spec iMac for work, the machine ought to pay for itself pretty quickly.

The iMac Pro certainly was a beast at the time, packing a 27-inch 5K-resolution screen, Intel Xeon W workstation processors (up to 18 cores), gobs of RAM and storage, and AMD Radeon Pro Vega graphics. It had zero hardware refreshes throughout its existence, however. Great computer, but not one Apple had big plans for. As it stands, the current 27-inch iMac has the 5K screen and can be configured with a 10-core Core i9 CPU, up to 128GB RAM, up to 8TB of SSD storage, 10Gb Ethernet, and a Radeon Pro 5700XT graphics card. It should stand up to the former iMac Pro in terms of both design and hardware.
