Behringer BU100: USB boundary mic for chatting, streaming and podcasting
Behringer has announced the BU100 USB boundary microphone for vocal applications. Designed to be extremely easy to set up and use, the BU100 simply sits on the table in front of you and picks up whatever you throw at it.

With millions still locked up at home around the world, podcasting, live streaming and video conferencing are all the rage. That’s why manufacturers are scrambling to release easy-to-use microphones to satisfy the demand for high-quality voice recording solutions. Just a few months ago, Behringer entered the podcasting mic market with the Bigfoot USB microphone. Now, the manufacturer presents another inexpensive USB mic for voice applications, this time in a boundary form factor.
The semi-cardioid Behringer BU100 is designed to be dropped onto the table in front of you. This way, you don’t need to deal with bulky tripod stands or wall mounts, and several people can easily use the same mic. A friction pad on the bottom prevents excessive movement. That said, the die-cast metal enclosure also offers holes for attaching the microphone to the wall, for more permanent installations.
The BU100 connects directly to your Mac or PC via the USB output. It can also be used with mobile devices that support powering the mic over USB. You may need an additional adapter to connect it to your tablet PC or mobile phone. The built-in A/D converter supports a resolution of up to 48 kHz / 16 bit.
The integrated mute button with a status LED is an essential feature for conferencing applications and may also come in handy in certain live streaming situations. For monitoring, the BU100 offers a 3.5 mm headphone output, which allows you to hear your own voice without any latency.
For just under 50 bucks, the BU100 looks like a simple and easy-to-use solution for anyone looking to go a step above the internal mic of a laptop.
On a side note, the microphone looks suspiciously similar to the t.bone GZ 1 USB* sold by our partner Thomann. The only noticeable difference is the mute button, which the t.bone lacks. Other than that, the two microphones seem identical, and they also cost the same.
Price and availability
The Behringer BU100 should be available soon. Behringer quotes a list price of USD 49.
