The new Fender Custom Shop Joe Strummer Esquire can be yours for just €15799!
You'll want to go out and rob a bank to get one of these new Joe Strummer Esquire models!
Fender’s latest Custom Shop model is based on one of Joe Strummer’s Esquire, a guitar which was modified and covered in stickers by the great man himself. But with a price tag of €15799, could this be the biggest rock n roll swindle of 2021?
Punk Rock Swindle?
I’m a huge fan of Joe Strummer and The Clash, so this latest Fender Custom Shop Joe Strummer Esquire should be something that I, in theory, would appreciate. Strummer and his bandmates were instrumental in the development of punk rock and have inspired countless other bands to this day. The guitar of his choice in the London Calling and Combat Rock era was his tried and true Fender Esquire and this latest reincarnation is supposed to emulate that guitar in one of its many forms. But at a whopping €15799 each, you can go ‘Straight To Hell’ on this one. The price tag is just ridiculous, at best.
Fender Joe Strummer Esquire
The Fender Custom Shop has reissued this piece of music history for a limited run. The guitars are made by Master Builder Jason Smith, who has recreated Strummer’s Esquire down to the smallest cosmetic detail, complete with black racing stripe, custom “Bourbon Street” stickers, and a custom relic finish. Only 70 pieces are available worldwide. The model can be ordered immediately, but you’ll need deep pockets if you want to get your hands on one.
It has a hand-wound Josephina 55/56 bridge pickup and a ’59 Tele ashtray bridge, which you can either string-through the body or top-load through the rear of the bridge itself, a feature unique to this year. I have one of these on my own Esquire and prefer the through-bridge string set up myself.
I don’t care how well you can wield a screw driver, anyone can build an Esquire out of parts. You can even get a good ageing paint job done, if you must. I just think this model is largely a bit of a joke regards the price.
Joe Strummer Campfire
The Fender Joe Strummer Campfire acoustic guitar is inspired by the legendary bonfires hosted by Strummer at the Glastonbury Festival, a tradition that has continued annually in the Strummerville area of the festival. It is a fair bit cheaper and will probably be a lot easier to find as well. You may actually get a chance to own one of these!
Perfect Fireside guitar?
The small body is ideal for those on the go. The model features a solid spruce top with mahogany back and sides, and looks pretty cool with its matte black finish. Elsewhere you get nickel hardware and star inlays. And you won’t have to rob a bank to own this one.
Fender is also releasing a series of Joe Strummer guitar straps and a pick tin, which you can add to your ‘Strummer Shrine’ in hope of copping some of the legend’s essence.

I think Joe Strummer would deeply hate that Esquire.
I tend to agree with you there.
Yeah, powerfully lame.
I was thinking that myself, no way would he be happy. The irony of recreating the guitar of a punk icon that costs more than some peoples annual salary is staggering,
Do me a favour. Like most famous socialists, Strummer was born into a wealthy well-to-do establishment family, boarded at an exclusive school, only actually got his hands dirty working for a living for about five minutes, and eventually died a fat millionaire multiple property owner including a lovely dacha in the forest of Broomfield, on the old Earl of Somerset estate.
Up the workers!
I always wanted to be the first original me, not copying-someone-who-went-before-me-because-I’m-playing-a-copy-of-their-guitar. And I’m yet to see a guitar that plays better in a bank vault than it does in the hands of even the most rank beginner.
Hard Rock Café can afford it, why can’t you?
Ha, you think it’s funny, turning rebellion into money……
Why not? Strummer did. He died a millionaire multiple property owner.
Maybe he left his huge inheritance to the poor … oh no, he left it all to his wife, who licensed this product.
