Circuit Happy ML:2 is an Ableton Link-infused clock generator in just 2HP
From the company that brought us the Missing Link desktop Ableton Link box comes a Link infused Eurorack clock generator in just 2HP.
ML:2
Sometimes big functionality can come in small packages. The ML:2 can connect wirelessly to Ableton Live running on your computer and maintain tempo sync via the very useful Ableton Link technology. Ableton Link is one of the smartest and easiest forms of sync to emerge in recent years. All you need is all Ableton Link-enabled devices on the same network and they all stay together – it’s completely brilliant.
Ableton Link has been adopted by numerous software and hardware devices including lots of iOS music apps, Reaktor, Elk AudioOS, Resolume, Bigwig Studio, Reason, Maschine and the Akai MPC.
Circuit Happy first tackled this with the Missing Link desktop box which had added extras like flashing lights and a nice BPM display. I’m happy to say the ML:2 retains the flashing lights. When not connected to Ableton Link the ML:2 can act as a clock generator and connect to other ML:2 modules in your system without the need for cables. It’s a useful way to sync up different Eurorack cases without dragging long cables about the place. The ML:2 can also generate its own network so you can connect your laptop directly to it which would be especially useful at a gig where you might not have access to Wi-Fi.
It has 2 clock outputs that can be configured as gates or triggers making it a quite versatile device. For instance one output could be doing the sync triggers while the other outputs a gate while the triggers are going to emulate a run mode. You configure the module via a web browser interface so you’re not trying to fuss about with controls on a 2HP module. However, it does have tempo +- buttons and a tap tempo for taking full control of the timing.
The ML:2 is a brilliantly useful module that could easily turn up in all your racks and be the thing you rely on to keep it all together. The ease with which you can add an iOS device or a laptop is awesome and would encourage you to bring these two worlds together simply because you don’t have to worry about the sync.
The ML:2 is available now for $185.
