MXR Shin-Juku Drive: A Dumble amp in a pedal?
MXR and Japanese amp designer Shin Suzuki team up to capture legendary Dumble tones

The new MXR Shin-Juku Drive is a little green pedal that the company claims sounds like a Dumble amp. The legendary Dumble amps change money for thousands of pounds, so if you want that tone then this might be just what you are looking for.
Dumble History
Alexander ‘Howard’ Dumble made custom ‘one-off’ amplifiers for the stars and had a series of short runs on a few specific models like the Overdrive Special and the Steel String Singer. He will only make an amp if he wants to and he hasn’t made any for years. Dumble originally began by modifying old Fender amps and gradually scaled this up into full-on amp building. They’re hard to find and if you do they cost a small fortune ($35,000-40,000 on average). Players like SRV, John Mayer and Eric Clapton have all used Dumble amps in the past, so they have a reputation. All this has led to prices sky-rocketing in recent years.
MXR
The Shin-Juku Drive seeks to emulate the legendary Dumble tone with three simple controls Output, Tone and Gain, plus a dark switch. MXR Custom Shop has worked with Shin Suzuki, a Japanese amp designer who is quite renowned for his work. Together they believe they have captured the essence of the ‘Dumble tone’ in this little green pedal.
There is only one audio demo of the Shin-Juku Drive on YouTube and to be fair to the pedal, it is not very well recorded, so I cannot give an honest opinion on the pedal based solely on this one demo video.
There are rumours from our German sister site suggesting that the pedal itself may be limited to 2500 units worldwide and cost around EUR €196.35, though some US dealers are listing it at USD $129 plus taxes already.
