The new Mendocino Junior models from Grez Guitars are handcrafted using reclaimed redwood that is a century old. This only adds to the allure of the instrument and, hopefully, adds to the tone as well.

Grez Guitars Mendocino Junior

Grez Guitars already has a great reputation for building high-quality instruments. The company’s new Mendocino Junior ups the ante with this old-growth tonewood for the body. By using this reclaimed old-growth redwood, the guitar should get you a similar quality of timber as to what was used in the 1950s by companies like Gibson.

“Building with first growth reclaimed wood originally harvested 100 years ago gave us a head start. This wood is super well-seasoned and has a liveliness that is hard to get from younger recently harvested trees.” – luthier Barry Grezbik

Keep it simple

The guitar has a 24.75″ scale-length Honduran mahogany neck and a 12″ radius Macassar ebony fingerboard with maple inlays. For pickups, you get a single Wolftone Meaner Dog Ear P-90, which makes this guitar aimed straight at players that enjoy a Les Paul Junior style guitar. Other appointments include 22 nickel silver gold jumbo frets and a MojoAxe compensated wrap tailpiece. All of this should add up to great playability and spot-on intonation.

Wolftone Meaner Dog Ear P-90

The single P-90 pickup is wired up via an Emerson 500k Volume pot, with a 250k Tone pot and a .022 PIO capacitor. I’d imagine this combination of electronics is to let you dial in a wide range of tones with that single Wolftone Meaner Dog Ear P-90. And if you check out the demo video below, it appears to do just that.

I’m definitely a fan of single pickup guitars, with both the Fender Esquire and Gibson Les Paul Junior being on my personal top ten guitars of all time. If you enjoy the freedom that the simple life gives you as a player, then this new Grez Guitars Mendocino Junior could be exactly what you are looking for.

RRP – USD 2700
