If you’ve been using DAW software for a while, you’ll no doubt have heard of the Lexicon PSP 42 plug-in.

The PSP 42 comes from a time when the audio software market was a fraction of what we have currently available, and even vintage emulations weren’t that popular. (Because why would you want to copy hardware, right?)

One way or another, it just became one of those must-have plug-in effects that sounded good on pretty much everything you fed through it. What’s more, it can be used in many different styles of music.

The key to the design, and therefore the sound too, was the variable sample rate which extended the range of delay time beyond what was possible with the original PCM 42 hardware. In addition, the tape saturation algorithm adds a unique edge to the sound.

With version 2, however, the modeling of the original hardware is even better than ever. What’s more, you can access Legacy mode to give you the original PSP42 sound.

There are now 3 different emulation modes for even more authenticity when you want it:

Clean mode: gives you just the PSP 42 plug-in with no added emulations

Lims: adds the two opto limiter stages from the PCM 42 (at the input and before the A/D converter) into the circuit path

Full: add the opto limiters and the A/D and D/A conversion stages from the original hardware.

Some of the other new features include a sweepable Hi-Cut filter, LFO tempo sync, and variable waveform phase. You can also simulate –10 dBV or +4dBu operation with via the input sensitivity control.

The Envelope Controller signal can be inverted, or controlled via the sidechain input and there are four Direction modes with different forward and backward repeat options.
