A new, ‘Made In Japan’ Charvel Guthrie Govan Signature MJ San Dimas SD24 CM
A slightly more affordable signature model for Guthrie Govan
This new Charvel Guthrie Govan MJ ‘Made In Japan’ San Dimas offers an alternative to the standard USA made signature guitar for the UK six string wizard. Announced last July, it looks like it is finally available at last!
Charvel Guthrie Govan ‘Made In Japan’ San Dimas
For this new Charvel Guthrie Govan Signature MJ San Dimas SD24 CM you get a basswood body with an ash top and a specially contoured heel in a Three Tone Sunburst finish, plus a bolt-on “caramelised” maple neck with graphite reinforcement, a satin finish on the back of the neck and a heel-mounted truss rod adjustment wheel. The 12″-16″ compound radius caramelised maple fingerboard comes with 24 jumbo stainless-steel frets, as well as crème dot inlays and Luminlay glow-in-the-dark side dots.
Charvel Pickups
The model features a set of three specially wound Charvel custom pickups in the HSH configuration with five-way switching, and a two-way mini toggle switch to engage single-coil simulation in bridge and neck humbuckers. You also get two Luminlay numbered dome knobs for the volume and tone controls.
“I have been playing guitar since I was three years old, so having my own signature mode feels like an honor which comes with a certain responsibility. If you are going to have your name on the back of an instrument’s headstock, that’s you personally vouching for the quality and usability of that instrument, which is not something to be taken lightly. With my signature Charvel guitar, I feel completely confident to play it anywhere in the world and at any type of gig.” – Guthrie Govan
Locking Bridge with no fine tuners
Then finally, you have a recessed Charvel locking tremolo bridge with pop-in tremolo arm and a brass block, and a set of Gotoh die-cast locking tuners and Graph Tech TUSQ XL nut. No fine tuners here, and no locking nut, just like his US made model. It should work well. I have a guitar with a similar configuration and, as long the nut is lubricated, everything stays in tune nicely.
Is it a good buy?
Great looking guitar, but it still isn’t that much cheaper than the US made version. Especially considering the differences in hardware. However, you do save roughly a grand. And it does look lovely in that Three Tone Sunburst finish, with the caramelised neck.
