Abletunes EQ WISE+ is a parametric EQ with built-in frequency cheat sheets
Plug-in makers have been creative with their spins on the equalizer’s decades-old concept lately. Eventide tried out a novel approach that takes the human ear’s natural acoustics into account. Now, Abletunes is bringing out EQ WISE+. This is an 8-band parametric equalizer with an educational purpose – it’s got built-in interactive instrument frequency charts to help you with the delicate task of equalization.
The charts let you know where the most important frequencies are for each instrument and gives you extra information about them. Abletunes’ thesis is understanding and recognizing what certain frequencies sound like will help you learn equalizing, letting you become faster and more efficient with butchering up frequencies.
Of course, these frequency charts are mainly intended as starting points to set you off on the right track. Each track and instrument has a different timbre, which shapes its frequencies’ composition. Still, there are 20 charts, as well as a built-in spectrum analyzer. Oversampling can be enabled as well, for a cleaner sound.
It’s kind of obvious where Abletunes got the idea for EQ WISE+’ stand-out feature. Frequency cheat sheets, either printed or shown on computer monitors, have been a thing in studios since the advent of audio recording. Incorporating this tried and true practice into a full-fledged parametric EQ with a modern interface seems very clever, in that “how come no one thought of it before” way – to our knowledge, at least!
Overall, we’re excited about this equalizer, as it has a genuinely useful schtick and it looks bomb. Take the demo for a spin and see if you still have something to learn about EQ-ing particular instruments.
Price and availability
EQ WISE+ costs $50 and is available for Windows and Mac machines in 32 & 64-bit AU and VST formats. A user manual is available, as well as a limited demo version with three frequency bands.
