AJH Synth and Hans Zimmer RadioPhonic Synth
Hans Zimmer isn’t just a legendary film composer, but also one of the greatest synth geeks and collectors on the planet. One of his latest projects is the resurrection of the legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop at Maida Vale Studio, which he acquired last year. Originally founded in 1958, the workshop made many vital contributions to the history of electronic music.
It goes without saying that a special workshop deserves a special synth. That’s why Hans Zimmer teamed up with AJH Synth to create the custom-built RadioPhonic Synth. At least one of these massive modular systems will surely find a permanent home at Maida Vale. But AJH Synth will also sell the system in very limited numbers.
A total of 48 modules are housed in a beautifully crafted case made from American walnut and cherry. If the shape of the case reminds you of the EMS VCS 3, that’s no coincidence. The VCS 3 was the first synth Hans Zimmer owned, so it holds a special place in the composer’s heart.
In terms of sonic possibilities, however, the RadioPhonic Synth vastly surpasses the capabilities of the VCS 3 and Synthi 100. Among the 48 modules are no less than seven MiniMod VCOs. In addition to two MiniMod Transistor Ladder Filters, there are two Sonic XV Ladder Filter / Wavefolder modules, as well as the Oberheim-inspired Gemini 2412 Dual VCF and the FFB914 Fixed Filter Bank. The modulation possibilities are of course also plentiful with numerous LFOs, envelopes, VCAs, effects, and more. You’ll find the complete list of modules on the manufacturer’s website.
