The ever-increasing trend for e-Drum kits with full-size shells can mean more expense and more space required. The Alesis Strata Core may just be the perfect compromise.
If there’s one area where Alesis has continued to have a significant and important presence, it’s e-Drums. And with the new Alesis Strata Core, that presence is set to continue.
March seems such a long way away right now, as we head through Autumn into the Winter, but it was back then when Alesis released their new flagship kit, the Strata Prime. Sounding like something from a Transformers cartoon, the Strata Prime set new benchmarks for both quality and affordability.
The Alesis Strata Core
But even that might have been a bit rich for some and Alesis does like to cater to people with various sized wallets and credit card limits. And this is where the Strata Core comes in. Alesis have trimmed away some of the excesses of the Prime and delivered a kit with a lower price point and smaller footprint.
As the name suggests, the Strata Core is the heart of the Prime kit but with less bulk in most departments. What you don’t lose are all the things that set the Strata line apart from more expensive kits. You still get great pads with superb mesh heads. The 360º cymbals are retained, as is the patent-pending magnetic hi-hat system.
The Strata’s Been on a Diet
But the Core has shallow drum shells with slightly smaller diameters and the Core module, whilst retaining the touch screen and BFD-sourced sounds, is physically smaller with a little less onboard sounds. The Strata Core module is still crammed to the gunnels with great sounds, articulations and mic positions.
The rear connectivity has been reduced too, so there are only two additional trigger inputs, no assignable outs, no XLR main outs and no SD Card slot. But you can still import sounds via USB and Bluetooth 5 for audio streaming.

As with most e-Drum kits that are looking to reach a certain price point, the drum throne, hi-hat stand and kick pedal are not included, but the snare drum stand is. And that’s important. All too often, manufacturers place the snare drum on the main rack on lower-priced kits, but not here.
