ALK2 for Mac lets you go crazy with loops in a live environment
Developer zenAud.io released an interesting live performance tool called ALK2. It’s a looper and sequencer hybrid which facilitates so-called “arranged live looping”.
The concept is based on two operating principles — loops are recorded and played like a typical looper would, creating layers of sound. Then comes the sequencing part — the resulting loops can be drawn, moved, copied, cut and pasted into arrangements. The whole idea is to let the software handle your loops within a traditional DAW workflow, while performing live simultaneously and free of distractions.
ALK2 is a full-bodied VST/AU host as well, meaning you can incorporate your preferred plug-ins and take advantage of built-in quantization and beat repeat features. There’s a clever “panic” function which crossfades the current take with its “reference” version so you can recover easily if you make a mistake. Automation is available as well, letting you sequence parameter or musical changes.
There’s lots to ALK2 and it’s certainly a viable alternative to Ableton Live for performances, although you will have to endure a learning curve and switch up your workflow a fair bit. Still, if the payoff is an easier time triggering loops, plug-ins, synths, and anything else that goes into a live performance, meddling around with ALK2 could prove to be worthwhile.
