Apple’s new patent for foldable displays covers a wide range of possible applications and appears to go beyond smartphones. Particularly exciting is the possible introduction of an 18.8-inch foldable device in 2028 that can be used as a tablet, notebook or external display. However, analysts report that Apple is facing technical challenges in developing the display and mechanics, which has delayed implementation so far. And if we know Apple, they will keep working on the ‘foldable displays’ project until they have created the perfect gadget.

At the heart of the patent is a novel folding mechanism that adds flexibility by moving the pivot axis outside the individual links. At the same time, gears ensure that both sides of the hinge move synchronously. This would make a foldable monitor or similar device not only visually appealing, but also technically robust and durable. Wow!
