Are foldable displays for MacBooks finally on the way? Apple continues to work on folding technology and has been granted a new patent for innovative hinge mechanisms (we reported on the first steps here). The patent describes an ingenious system of interlocking ‘fingers’ and crescent-shaped slots that allow precise rotation and stability. The mechanism ensures that foldable devices are reliably held at the desired angle and move smoothly during the folding process. Sounds like a very interesting and new ‘One More Thing’! What do you think?

New Apple Patent Reveals Hinges for Foldable Displays, Tablets and More

Apple’s new patent for foldable displays covers a wide range of possible applications and appears to go beyond smartphones. Apple is apparently planning to use the technology in tablets, laptops, wearables such as watches, monitors and desktop displays. Particularly exciting is the possible introduction of an 18.8-inch foldable device in 2028 that can be used as a tablet, notebook or external display. However, analysts report that Apple is facing technical challenges in developing the display and mechanics, which has delayed implementation so far. And if we know Apple, they will keep working on the ‘foldable displays’ project until they have created the perfect gadget.

At the heart of the patent is a novel folding mechanism that adds flexibility by moving the pivot axis outside the individual links. At the same time, gears ensure that both sides of the hinge move synchronously. This would make a foldable monitor or similar device not only visually appealing, but also technically robust and durable. Wow!

Although Apple has yet to launch a foldable product, the patent suggests a serious interest in the technology. Cupertino seems to want to meet the growing demands and trends for foldable displays without compromising on quality and functionality. Whether and when a foldable screen or other such devices will actually be available remains to be seen. However, the current patent shows Apple’s commitment to driving forward-looking innovation in this segment. Apple, of course!
