[05 March 2025] As expected, Apple today unveiled the new MacBook Air with the M4 chip, offering improved performance and a new color option. The 13- and 15-inch models get an upgrade that not only increases speed, but also adds new features such as an improved camera and support for multiple external displays. The new Sky Blue color joins the existing Midnight, Starlight and Silver options, while Space Gray is no longer available. The MagSafe charging cable is also available to match the color of the case. But that’s not all!

MacBook Air M4: Apple’s New Lightweight is More Powerful Than Ever

The M4 chip in the new MacBook Air delivers a significant performance boost. With a 10-core CPU, a 10-core graphics processor, and support for up to 32GB of integrated memory, the new MacBook Air is twice as fast as the M1. Most notably, the performance of the Neural Engine has been increased by a factor of three. The M4 chip, first used in the iPad Pro, delivers about 20 percent more performance than the M3 chip – in both single-core and multi-core applications. And a new display engine enables the use of up to two external 6K displays in addition to the internal display.

Another highlight is the enhanced camera. The new 12-megapixel center stage camera automatically keeps the user in the middle of the picture, and the Desk View feature lets users see themselves and their desk at the same time during a video call. These innovations make MacBook Air even more attractive for use in the home office or on the road. Despite the technical enhancements, the MacBook Air starts at $999. Preorders are available now, with shipping beginning March 12.

New High-End Mac Studio

In addition to the MacBook Air, Apple has also upgraded the Mac Studio with the M4 Max and M3 Ultra chipsets. The M4 Max offers up to 16 CPU cores, up to 40 GPU cores, and up to 128GB of RAM. First benchmarks show a performance increase of up to 75% compared to the M2 Max. The M3 Ultra goes one step further and offers a 32-core CPU with 24 performance cores and eight efficiency cores. The GPU can be configured with up to 80 cores, which Apple promises will double the graphics performance over the M2 Ultra. Wow!

The new Mac Studio also supports Thunderbolt 5, which enables data rates of up to 120Gb/s. Four or six Thunderbolt 5 ports are available, depending on the configuration. In addition, the Mac Studio can now be configured with up to 16TB of SSD storage, while the M3 Ultra chip even supports up to 512GB of unified storage. The rear panel remains unchanged with a mix of USB-C and USB-A ports, HDMI, 10Gb Ethernet, and an SD card reader.

The redesigned MacBook Air with M4 chip and the new Mac Studio are available for pre-order now and will begin shipping on March 12. The Mac Studio will continue to start at $1,999. With these upgrades, Apple once again raises the bar for performance and efficiency in its notebook and desktop systems. But whether it’s worth buying a new computer every year or two (and for my bank account!) is questionable, since even my Mac Studio M1 in my recording studio is rarely pushed to its limits.

Early Leaks Due to macOS Sequoia Update!

[11 December 2024] The Apple MacBook Air M4 seems to be close to release. Evidence of the new models has been found in the final version of macOS 15.2 Sequoia. The two new model numbers ‘Mac16.12’ and ‘Mac16.13’ refer to the upcoming 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air M4 models, which are expected to be released in the spring of 2025 (or maybe sooner?). The previous M3 models were not released until March 2024, which makes the short update cycle truly astonishing.

Apple MacBook Air M4: Major Update Planned for 2025 or Sooner

While the design of the machines is unlikely to change, the focus is clearly on the new M4 chip, which logically promises a noticeable performance boost. A mini LED display still seems unlikely, but the improved processing power could make the MacBook Air M4 worth waiting for. It remains to be seen whether Apple will include additional features such as the Center Stage FaceTime camera.

Apple traditionally uses the months of March and April for product launches, but the clear hints in macOS 15.2 do not entirely rule out an earlier announcement. In October 2024, Apple unveiled the MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac mini with the M4 chip, so the MacBook Air would fit into a logical line of product refreshes.

Leak Confirmed: New MacBook Air M4 On the Way

The previously known model numbers of the M3 machines, ‘Mac15.2’ and ‘Mac15.13’, suggest that Apple is consistently developing the new generation, but not planning any drastic external changes. The M4 chip has been designed to deliver greater efficiency and performance, which should be particularly noticeable in multitasking and demanding applications.

The clues come from internal configuration files in macOS 15.2 that describe specific device types, leaving little room for speculation. Whether Apple takes the next step in March 2025 or later will depend on the final roadmap for macOS 15.3. Technical challenges such as fine-tuning the mechanical components and optimising the display could potentially delay the launch. Nevertheless, the MacBook Air M4 appears to be an important piece of Apple’s updated Mac strategy.

They need to start looking into dedicated GPU’s since AI is on the uptick for anyone who wants to do it without paying a service. Comfy UI is ultra-powerful and completely useless on a mac with a nvidia GPU. Be nice to see mac try and add some competition in this area. I know their users may not care but im 100% sure there is a market for mac users who need GPU’s for 3d work and AI.

In the meantime, the $599 M4 base Mini is capable of doing 70+ tracks and plug-ins out the a$$.

But whatever, it’s your money. 💸
