Apple has introduced a new generation of wireless in-ear headphones for active users: the Powerbeats Pro 2. The redesigned earphones feature a number of improvements, including Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), an H2 chip for more efficient performance of background calculations for all functions, an improved fit and, for the first time, heart rate monitoring. This feature should be of particular interest to fitness enthusiasts, as it can be seamlessly synchronized with popular fitness apps. In addition to these new features, the weight and shape of the earphones have been optimized for a more comfortable fit.

The new ear hooks on the Powerbeats Pro 2 are 50 percent smaller than the first-generation ear hooks and are made of a more flexible nickel-titanium alloy, which allows them to fit more comfortably while still remaining secure in the ear. Despite their more compact design, the new headphones weigh 20 percent less and are IPX4 water and sweat resistant. The battery has also been improved: with Active Noise Cancellation off, the earphones now last up to 10 hours (!), and with the included charger, the total runtime increases to 45 hours. There is also new support for wireless charging via the Qi standard, while charging via USB-C is still possible.

The sound quality of the Powerbeats Pro 2 has also been improved. They feature a newly designed acoustic architecture with a dual transducer for improved sound fidelity. In addition to adaptive equalization and personalized spatial audio, the new model offers lossless audio with ultra-low latency for the first time, which is designed to work with Apple’s Vision Pro for an immersive sound experience. Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation with Transparency Mode lets you selectively block or let through background noise, depending on your environment and your needs – just like the new AirPods.

Another key feature is heart rate monitoring, which uses optical sensors to take more than 100 measurements per second. This data can be synced with popular fitness apps like Nike Run Club, Peloton, and Apple Health. The feature is automatically activated when a compatible app starts a workout, while Android users must manually activate it in the Beats app. When wearing an Apple Watch at the same time, heart rate is measured primarily through the watch to avoid double counting.

In addition to the hardware, the user experience has also been improved. The Powerbeats Pro 2 can be paired with a single tap and supports automatic switching between Apple devices. Multiple users can also share the same audio stream. Control is via the “b” logo on the earbuds, which executes configurable commands such as toggling noise cancellation or activating Siri. The earphones also feature a mechanical volume control and improved microphones with voice isolation for clearer phone calls.

Pricing and Availability

The Powerbeats Pro 2 come in four colors: Electric Orange, Hyper Purple, Jet Black and Quick Sand. They will be available in Europe for €299 and in the USA for $249. The headphones will officially go on sale on February 13, and will be available directly from Apple and through authorized resellers.
