Are Modal Electronics teasing a new synth or is it modular?
An Instagram post from synthesizer makers Modal Electronics suggests that it might be about to release either a new synth or something in Eurorack?
Modal Modular?
You assume it’s going to be a synth because this is Modal after all. And in the very short burst of video we do get a blurred keyboard synth in the background. But on closer inspection, the background synth looks very much like the existing Modal 002 hybrid polyphonic synthesizer, especially if you put them side-by-side.
But what’s more important is what we see next and what we’re hearing. In from the right comes what is unmistakably a modular device of some kind. No other Modal gear has patch sockets, so this is rather exciting.
We can see the controls for a filter. I think I spotted the words “transistor ladder” in there somewhere along with a lot of mentions of “Morph” and the label “Dual Analogue”. But is it a dual analogue filter, a dual analogue VCO or even perhaps a dual analogue (something) semi-modular synthesizer? Judging by the patch sockets, it seems to be in the Eurorack format. We have a couple of different outputs and inputs like FM, V/Oct.
The sound in the video is quite raw. It could be the sound of two oscillators being tuned/detuned to each other, which is supported in the “Dual Analogue” label.
There seems to be a connection to the Modal 002 in terms of styling, and its presence in the background would suggest this is a modular expression of elements of that synthesizer. It’s interesting how all the hashtags on the post don’t mention Eurorack or modular synthesis. They are focused on the word “synth” which does lead me to think this is a complete synth voice of some kind rather than a bunch of modules.
Apparently, we will learn more tomorrow, the 7th September.
