Arturia 3 Modulation FX: three timeless classics with a modern twist
Arturia has expanded its series of effect plug-ins with ‘3 Modulation FX you’ll actually use’. The collection contains emulations of the Roland Dimension D chorus, Mu-Tron Bi-Phase phaser and Bel BF-20 flanger. As always, Arturia has added a couple of modern extras to the hardware emulations.
Arturia 3 Modulation FX You’ll Actually Use
Arturia is steadily expanding its portfolio of effect plug-ins. After ‘3 Preamps’, ‘3 Filters’, ‘3 Compressors’, ‘3 Delays’ and ‘3 Reverbs’, they’ve now taken on three classic modulation effects. The emulations cover the three most frequently used modulation effects: chorus, phaser and flanger.
Chorus Dimension-D
The Chorus Dimension-D is of course an emulation of the famed Roland Dimension D SDD-320 rack mount unit from the 1980s. Despite offering only a handful of settings, the bucket-brigade-based Dimension D found its way onto countless hit records and is still in demand today. Expanding on what the original hardware offered, Arturia’s emulation features a stereo width control, four settings for the BBD Warmth and selectable LFO waveforms for stereo movement. It also offers a mix knob.
Phaser Bi-Tron
For a phaser, Arturia has selected the equally famous Mu-Tron Bi-Phase pedal. Like the original, the Phaser Bi-Tron plug-in offers two separate phaser lines and two LFOs (sweep generators). While the original pedal consisted of two 6-stage phasers, Arturia’s version lets you choose from two to 12 poles for each unit. Each phaser offers depth controls for both LFOs, which means that the plug-in should be capable of some pretty wild modulations. Add to that the configurable routing and the virtual expression pedal for live tweaking, and this looks like a very capable phaser plug-in.
Flanger BL-20
Flanger BL-20 is based on the rarest of them all. The Bel BF-20 Stereo Flanger was designed by former Genesis guitarist Mick Barnard and came out in the late 70s. The plug-in lets you combine various modulation sources for a wide variety of unique flanger sounds: LFO (Auto), envelope (internal or external) and manual. They’ve also included a function generator from the Pigments synthesizer for complex modulations. Like the chorus, the Flanger BL-20 offers a BBD warmth setting.
Like Arturia’s other FX collections, ‘3 Modulation FX’ looks like a well-curated collection of essential classics that have been enhanced with some useful modern-day tweaks. I’m looking forward to trying these out.
Price and compatibility
Until September 13, 2020, the 3 Modulations bundle with all three effects is available for an introductory price of USD 149. The individual price for each plug-in is USD 99, which means that you can save 50% if you buy all three of them now.
The plug-ins require Windows 7 or higher or macOS 10.10 or higher. They’re available in VST, VST3, AU and AAX formats (64 bit only).
The installation and authorization process is handled by the Arturia Software Center application.
