Arturia’s annual freebie for Christmas has become somewhat of a tradition. In recent years, you could snatch the company’s Tape MELLO-FI, Chorus JUN-6, and Rev PLATE-140 plugins for free around Christmas time. This year, you’ve got a chance to add a famous filter to this collection. Arturia Filter MS-20 was pulled from their emulation of the famous Korg MS-20 synthesizer and replicates its classic filter design – and then some.
The filter section of the MS-20 is characterized by the combination of high-pass and low-pass filters arranged in a series. Both filters have their own peak (resonance) controls and by using them in tandem, you can create all sorts of resonant band-pass effects. Arturia has added a master cutoff knob that allows you to control both at the same time. Furthermore, they’ve also added a distortion section with additional low-cut and high-cut filters. You can switch the order of the filter and distortion in the signal path, which allows for plenty of wacky effects.
But that’s not all! Arturia Filter MS-20 also offers a full-blown modulation engine with an LFO / function generator, step sequencer, and envelope follower. This lets you create all sorts of modulating, rhythmic effects. In addition to this, there’s a knob for controlling the stereo field. With these additions, Filter MS-20 is much more than just an emulation of a famous filter – and an awesome Christmas gift from Arturia!
By the way, Arturia’s Filter MS-20 emulation is also part of the recently released Pigments 4 synthesizer.
